On 13 May 1939, more than 900 Jews fled Nazi Germany aboard a luxury cruise liner, the MS St Louis. Hoping to reach Cuba and then travel to the US, they were turned away in Havana, the United States, and Canada before being forced to return to Europe - where more than 250 then died at Nazi hands.
